TRAM Flap FAQ Dallas

TRAM Flap Breast Reconstruction – Frequently Asked Questions

“Who would not be a good candidate for a TRAM or DIEP flap procedure?”

If you are very overweight (BMI>40), smoke cigarettes, have had previous surgery at the flap site, or have any circulatory problems, a TRAM or DIEP flap may not be the procedure for you.  In addition, if you are very thin, you may not have enough tissue in your abdomen to create a breast mound with this method.  Doctor Meade will let you know during your consultation after his evaluation.

“Would pregnancy be possible after a TRAM flap reconstruction?”

It would be possible, although not ideal.  The harvesting of tissue to rebuild the breast mound could result in temporary or even permanent muscular weakness in the abdominal wall with regard to the stretching forces of a pregnancy.  Discuss this with Doctor Meade as he has helped many patients who are still of childbearing age.
