Women may choose to have breast reduction surgery because they feel self-conscious about their breast size or want to improve related health concerns like persistent neck, back and shoulder pain. Ongoing skin irritation or infections, which can also be a concern for women with overly large breasts, may also be improved following breast reduction surgery. Your Consultation
Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammaplasty) starts with a consultation with Dr. Meade, during which you can share your goals and expectations about the procedure. Dr. Meade will talk about your options, and conduct a physical evaluation to ensure that you’re a good candidate. You’ll be given detailed information about what to expect during and after surgery, and will also be provided with a cost estimate for your breast reduction, including price information as it may relate to your health insurance coverage. Dr. Meade’s staff members are able to assist you with completing the necessary documentation to submit your insurance claim for coverage, or request reimbursement for breast reduction surgery.
Preparing for Surgery
As your surgery date gets closer, Dr. Meade may request specific lab tests or medical evaluations, including a mammogram. You may also need to adjust current medications, vitamins or supplements. It’s also recommended that you avoid the consumption of alcohol and drugs and abstain from smoking for a certain period before and after surgery.
The Breast Reduction Procedure
The specific surgical approach Dr. Meade takes during breast reduction will depend on a number of different factors, including your overall build as well as the size, shape and placement of your breasts. Incisions for breast reduction are typically made around the nipple and within the inframammary fold, plus a vertical incision connecting the two. Some women may be candidates for a “scarless” breast augmentation, which is performed with liposuction alone. Dr. Meade works closely with you to ensure that he uses the surgical technique that will best help you meet your appearance goals.
Recovery & Results
Recovery after breast reduction surgery is different for every woman, but you can generally expect a minimum of 3 to 5 days spent resting followed by 10 to 14 days without strenuous physical exercise or activity. Most patients are comfortable enough that they don’t finish a prescription of 40 pain pills. It’s important to avoid heavy lifting, especially over the head, and to follow Dr. Meade’s post-surgical instructions to the letter.
You should see an immediate difference in the size of your breasts, as well as notice improvement in related physical issues that may have been caused by overlarge breasts. As swelling subsides and scars continue to fade, your breast shape will look more natural, and you should enjoy long-term results.
