Plastic surgery trends change frequently, affected by various factors including the general age of the population and celebrities that are in style. In the ‘90s, breast implants were the latest plastic surgery fad. But these days, it’s all about the chin. The latest trend in cosmetic surgery is chin implants, which many are referring to as “Chinplants.”
Dozens of celebrities have vouched for the Chinplant procedure, with many coming forward and admitting to having work done. Celebrities from the former Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger to “Real Housewives of Orange County” starlet Vicki Gunvalson have either already confessed to getting chin implants or have been rumored to have undergone the procedure.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), chin implants were the fastest-growing cosmetic procedure last year and in 2011, with surgeries increasing in frequency more than breast augmentation, Botox, and liposuction combined.
But what could possibly cause this sudden spike in the public’s interest for chin implants?
Chin implant surgery is a form of chin augmentation, known by its medical name of Genioplasty. The purpose of the procedure is to reshape the chin to provide a better balance in facial features. Many people suffer from a chin that is relatively small in comparison to the rest of the face. This can make other features, like the nose, appear much larger, leading the individual to feel self conscious.
The chin has also always been regarded as a basis for character judgment. Someone who has a strong or prominent chin is stereotyped to be more assertive, athletic and powerful, even though this may be far from the truth.
Society’s stereotypes, along with a person’s own self perception all play a role in the decision to undergo chin augmentation surgery. Additionally, the chin and jawline are among the first areas to show signs of aging, so many turn to the augmentation treatment to restore a more youthful appearance.
While both women and men have undergone the treatment, more male patients turn to Genioplasty to feel stronger and more aggressive physically.
Patients who are considering chin augmentation have a variety of options when it comes to the type of augmentation they would like to have. If an implant is selected, the material may be silicone, gortex or medpore, and would be inserted either through the mouth or through an incision under the chin. If the implant is inserted through the mouth, the patient will not have to worry about any scars left behind from the surgery. Patients can also choose to have the implants removed at a later time, much the same way a breast implant can be removed. The treatment itself is performed in roughly 30 minutes and downtime is relatively short. Mild to moderate discomfort may be experienced afterward with some swelling or bruising lasting around a week.
Patients can also opt for a different approach to the procedure, using lasting or permanent fillers to increase the size and symmetry of the chin. This procedure has some advantage in the fact that it can be performed extremely fast, in just minutes during the consultation, with very little or even no discomfort. Results can either be long lasting or permanent.
