Preparing for Surgery
As your liposuction date gets closer, Dr. Meade may request certain lab tests or medical evaluations in order to give you the best possible care, including taking pre-surgery photos for documentation purposes. Pre-surgery instructions will also be given to you, which may include making adjustments to any medications, vitamins or supplements you’re currently taking. It’s important to avoid the consumption of alcohol and drugs before and after surgery, and abstain from smoking for a certain amount of time as well.
The Liposuction Procedure
Although some smaller, more localized treatment spots may be addressed right in our office under local anesthesia, liposuction is most often performed as an outpatient procedure using either general or IV anesthesia instead.
To begin, tiny incisions are made near the target treatment area, just large enough to allow easy access with a cannula, or hollow surgical tube. These incisions are typically small enough that they fade dramatically with time, often becoming so inconspicuous as to be virtually unnoticeable. Through these incisions, a sterile saline solution is injected to help loosen fat cells for easier extraction. Finally, the fat is removed using suction, sculpting the entire area for smooth, natural-looking contours.
Recovery & Results
While the recovery experience is unique for every patient, most men and women feel comfortable enough after surgery that they don’t even finish a prescription of 40 pain pills. While it’s important to strictly follow Dr. Meade’s post-surgical instructions to avoid complications, the majority of liposuction patients are back to their normal daily routine relatively quickly. You can expect some bruising along with initial swelling as the body works to expel any remaining saline solution. Bruising normally fades quickly, and swelling may be alleviated with the help of a compression garment.
